Mammology
Preventive and diagnostic examination of the breasts and regional lymph nodes.
The mammology examination includes assessment of symptoms, family history, previous tests, and a clinical and ultrasound examination of the breasts and regional lymph nodes.
It is appropriate for:
- Annual preventive mammology examinations
- Assessment of lumps and thickening
- Follow-up of benign changes
- Assessment in cases of family history
- Referral for additional imaging studies
What the mammology examination includes
The mammology examination begins with a discussion of symptoms, previous tests, operations, medications taken and family history. This is followed by inspection and palpation of the breasts and regional lymph nodes.
An ultrasound examination is performed and/or additional imaging is recommended, for example mammography or magnetic resonance imaging.
